Where To Now?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

As the ALP begin to get their minds back into the secular world they will have a few questions to ponder. Where did I meet God in on the journey? For many it may not have been in the big gatherings but rather when I encountered people.
They will ask what did I learn ? What can I do when I get back into my parish? How can I explain to the parish how the experience has changed me?
What can I give back to the parish?
Friends reading this should also ask the pilgrims these questions as they are important as one of the criticisms of WYD is that people go and come back and nothing changes.

On The Road Again

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Well the time has come for us all to really part ways. At 3:30am Madrid time the members of the ALP were having showers and doing the last minute pack before leaving at 4:30 am to catch the Easy Jet flight to London and then on to the Singapore Airlines flight to Brisbane via Singapore. There were a few flight rearrangements but in the end all the pilgrims made it on to their flights one way or another. Some had an extra bill for excess luggage after shopping a little too vigorously!!!!! Travelling Easyjet was an interesting experience all the way through from check in to disembarcation you certainly do have to pay for each little extra.

Pilgrims now are asking should we go to Rio……well I guess we all have 18 months to give that some thought.

The Armidale Lismore Group 22 August 2011

The ALP’s last day together in Madrid began with Mass in the chapel of our accommodation. All our priests gathered to lead us in the celebration, Frs Roel and Paul Anthony resplendent in the WYD chasubles. As we pestered the mass together and reflected on the feats of the day Fr Peter pointed out that this would be the last time that we would celebrate this Eucharist together pointing out that the group will now begin to disperse and that each of us will take our own experiences of WYD back to our parishes and sow the seeds of the Gospel and hope that they will grow.

Our celebrations have been enhanced by the wonderful music and voices of Sarah, Nathania, Harriet and others throughout or pilgrimage. The sermons and words of encouragement from our priests has helped to guide us each day. Today Fr Anthony took us to Retiro Park for a final retreat. Here we met in groups and asked ourselves what have we learnt? Where did we encounter God in the time of pilgrimage? What action am I now being called to do when I return to my community?

After group photos and the Kangaroo Dance lead by Dallas we returned home for lunch and goodbyes. Carmel and Lee are off to London and France, Peter and Peter our seminarians had already departed and many of the group will be traveling to different parts of the world.

Soccer in Madrid

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Many of the three thousand Australians went to Spain verse the Rest of the World soccer match, as a closing thank you for making the journey to WYD Madrid. The Aussies were supplied with the tickets by Harvest our tour operators.Despite the rain all the pilgrims had a great time and it was a wonderful way to finish up a tremendous week of experiencing the Catholic Church and it’s many faces, voices and experiences. The Australian flag amongs many others was clearly evident in the live tv coverage and there were a few hoarse voices this morning.

WYD 2013 Brazil

The next WYD will be 8-13 July 2013 in Rio Brazil! That is less than 2 years away so I guess we start planning now. WYD in South America what a wonderful opportunity to see the Catholic Church in action in that part of the world.

Fr Roel and Fr Paul Anthony in the sanctuary area

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Fr Roel and Fr Paul Anthony are 200m from sanctuary and ready to concelebrate Mass with the Holy Father and a million pilgrims. They are very excited. So we have two reps up close and personal!!!

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Braving heat and storms, wind and rain, the ALP journeyed to Cuatro Vientos to meet with the Holy Father and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. We had three groups of pilgrims who attended in different ways the sleep out group, the vigil only group and a group who will go to both the vigil and Mass but not sleep out. Lee and Carmel are providing support and are on call just in case and are watching the vigil with keen eyes from the live tv coverage, our Chaplain, Fr Anthony is looking after the pilgrims at Cuatro Vientos and Fr Slack is guiding the small number who decided to stay at the accommodation.
Fr Roel and Fr Paul Anthony will be concelebrating Mass with Holy Father tomorrow. This Mass the high point, both the end and the beginning of WYD Madrid, 2011.

Seminarians’ Mass

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Peter Haak and Peter Zielinski joined with 4 000 seminarians from all over the world to celebrate Mass with the Holy Father at the Cathedral. The Holy Father announced St John of Avila a doctor of the Church at this Mass. The Mass was chanted and mainly in Spanish but the pope ‘s message was clear that he was happy that so many young men had taken up Christ’s call to the priestly vocation.
