Valencia History ….A Light Read for Days In The Diocese

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

The diocese of Valencia was founded in 527. It was originally a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Tarragona.

And certain signs are emerging of a Christian community in the fourth century. When martyred in Valencia San Vicente Martir, 22 January in the year 304, being a deacon of San Valero, bishop of Zaragoza, there was already a Christian community.

After the Muslim rule, the diocese was restored by King James I to reconquer the city in October 9, 1238, which enshrined the mosque of the city in Cathedral Church, dedicated to the Mother of the Lord in the mystery of Assumption great devotion of the monarch. (more…)

This will allow us to catch up with the Tamworth, Quirindi, Moree and Gunnedah Pilgrims. The second event is on Saturday 7 May in Armidale from 10 am until 2 pm. This gathering will provide an opportunity for the Armidale, Guyra and Glen Innes pilgrims to meet. But if you can’t make the gathering closet to you, then you can try the other venue.

Stations of the Cross Spanish Style

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

The Stations of the Cross in Madrid will be something most Australians will not have experienced. The stations will be beautiful statues on floats that will move past all the pilgrims in the heart of Madrid. The style of the statues reflects the religious art of the country. Take a look at the clip to get an idea of the spectacle the ALP and other pilgrims will experience.

A lot of Art for World Youth Day

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

The the following article is from the WYD Newsletter and outlines some of the wonderful cultural program for WYD Madrid.

The cultural program for World Youth Day (WYD) has officially been unveiled. There will be over 300 activities from 37 countries from every continent, of all artistic categories: movies, music, exhibitions, theater, and cultural tours of Madrid. The Spanish capital will thus become a leading cultural center. All the program activities will be held throughout the entire day and into part of the night, in order to take full advantage of the space available in Madrid.

“The cultural program is one of the main pillars of WYD, second only to the acts with the Pope and the Catechesis Sessions,” said Carla Diez de Rivera, Technical Director of the Department of Culture at WYD. “All these activities are an example of Christian cultural wealth in its most universal display,” she added.

With a pilgrim’s accreditation, which is obtained by registering for World Youth Day, all youth will have free access to the cultural program to be held from Monday, August 15 to Saturday, August 20. (more…)

One thing that Australian pilgrims are very likely to notice during any visit to Spain is the
enormous reverence for Mary that pervades the country. Although this is more likely in an older
generation, it will not be hard to find images and references to Mary even in the most unlikely
places – with roadside shrines and statues very common. The reverence also crosses the gender divide –
men are just as likely as women to be fervent in their devotion to Mary. Simply put, the Spanish love
Mary. (more…)
